The Lenten Journey

Home > Pastor’s Note > The Lenten Journey

I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church,
to observe a Holy Lent:
by self-examination and repentance;
by prayer, fasting, and self-denial;
and by reading and meditating on God's Holy Word.

As we prepare to enter into Lent at Caswell Springs, we are reminded that “Lent is the season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. The season is a preparation for celebrating Easter.” (The United Methodist Book of Worship)

As we anticipate Lent, I encourage each of us to consider how we might engage more deeply in the season. Lent calls us into a deep introspective examination of ourselves and our faith. Many enter into the Lenten journey committed to sacrificially give something up, fasting, and intentional times of prayer and scripture reading. Each of these disciplines, as do others, allow us to more fully engage in the season of Lent as we journey toward Easter.

This year, in addition to our personal Lenten disciplines, I am encouraging all of us to enter into prayer together as a community of faith. To assist, I am making available a Lenten Prayer Book, which will be available at the church beginning January 31. In this Prayer Book, you will find daily devotionals beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on Holy Saturday, excluding our Sunday's of worship together. I have prepared these devotionals based on texts from the Common Revised Lectionary for the Sunday following the weekly reading. This will allow us, individually and as a community of faith, to have already encountered and lived into the scriptures that we will hear that coming Sunday in worship. It will also allow each of us to meditate and pray on the same scripture on the same day. As you journey through Lent toward the Easter celebration, it is my prayer that you include this Lenten Prayer Book as a part of your Lenten journey.

Blessings during this Season of Lent,

Rev. Kevin Bradley
